Contemporary design style is often confused with modern design style… usually references to modern are in fact contemporary design. Contemporary design is a current design that includes open spaces, plenty of light, straight lines, plenty of glass, steel, and wood, and in some cases unusual layouts. The focus in contemporary interior design is on sharp lines - whether created from stone or from metals. The color scheme for contemporary interiors can be a little cold, but it's not uncommon to see colorful elements - without these elements the room could be very bland.

The term "contemporary interior design" might seem vague and interpretive. In fact, contemporary interior design is defined as an ever-changing style that is based on the here and now. The contemporary style is current, modern, and always changing to reflect the present time.

Modern interior design came about as a reaction to the ornate and almost baroque styles that came before it. As such, the main focus of this school of design is to act as the antithesis of those other looks. Rather than having lots of details and embellishments, modern furniture relies on clean lines and stark contrasts.

The emphasis in contemporary design style is on line and form and materials with a limited palette - primarily neutral colors with pops of bold color here and there.

Contemporary interior designs are comfortable and welcoming without being cluttered and dark.

Contemporary design is the opposite of modern design. While modern was a strict interpretation of form and function, contemporary design has no rules beyond the most important one: there are no rules.

In contemporary design, anything goes. Contemporary design describes the time period that we're in right now. It is ever-changing as trends come and go, often before they are even acknowledged as trends.

Contemporary design can incorporate elements of any other style, including modern design. For example, you could incorporate some traditional elements alongside some more modern elements for a unique look. The freedom to mix and match pieces is what makes the style so appealing to so many people.

How color is used in contemporary style?

Color is crucial in contemporary interior design. It sets the tone and is an integral part of every project. Color is used to highlight areas, create a focal point or accent a wall using paint, wallpaper or another element such as an area rug or piece of artwork.

The primary colors of contemporary style interiors are neutrals, black, and white. Avoid bright colors or even those muted pastel colors unless you like them as an accent color.

Use neutrals as these colors have an effect on making rooms bigger and brighter. These colors can give a feeling of spaciousness and are great for walls but also for floors and ceilings.

You can also use black or white paint for your walls but remember that these colors should be used as accents because using them over large spaces can make rooms look stark or too cold. You want to use these colors sparingly because they are so strong.

The most common colors used in contemporary interior design are white tones, black, and various shades and tints of grey. The use of neutrals is important because it creates balance and adds depth to any space. Neutrals are useful as accent colors as well as background colors to contrast against bolder hues.

Black is often used for grounding and defining a contemporary style room. The palette is often punched up and accented with bright and bold colors that play against neutrals.

Line and Space

The line is the most visible and distinguishing feature of a modern style interior design. Whether straight, curved, or diagonal, the line in design is a point-to-point trajectory that directs the eye and guides movement. It can be used to affect the scale, emphasize a focal point, construct a pattern or delineate shape and space.

In contemporary design, the emphasis on horizontal and vertical lines creates a sense of order and peace. While sharp angles and straight lines create definition, softer curves will create continuity by linking one area to another.

Space is another fundamental feature of contemporary design. Even though there is a sense of tidiness and organization in any type of contemporary style, there should always be a feeling of simplicity and elegance.

When it comes to rooms with a lot of views, such as ocean-facing rooms or balconies, the space should be kept uncluttered so as not to distract from the gorgeous views outside.

This can be done through large windows that don't have bulky treatments or by creating a clean wall for portraits or art pieces that don't take away from the space's openness and brightness.
